About the museum
The Museo Provinciale “Sigismondo Castromediano” in Lecce was founded in 1868 by Duke Sigismondo Castromediano, a traveller and great enthusiast for his region, and is considered the oldest public museum in Puglia.
The archaeological collections include Messapian and Roman finds, among them Apulian and Attic vases, alongside evidence of the earliest civilisations of the Salento. The prehistoric section houses a replica of the Grotta dei Cervi at Porto Badisco with its prehistoric engravings.
On the upper floor the picture gallery holds paintings and sculptures from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, with Byzantine and Venetian influences, and also includes a section on decorative arts and ceramics. The museum also devotes a pavilion to the history of the tenor Tito Schipa and a space to contemporary Salento artists, and offers thematic routes, events and workshops for adults and children.
