About the museum

MUSA is the university museum of anthropological, medical and forensic sciences for human rights of the Università degli Studi di Milano. It grew out of LABANOF, the Laboratorio di Antropologia e Odontologia Forense (Laboratory of Forensic Anthropology and Odontology) of the Istituto di Medicina Legale, founded in 1995 by Marco Grandi and Cristina Cattaneo.

In December 2017 LABANOF created the CAL, the Collezione Antropologica Labanof (Labanof Anthropological Collection), which holds over 10,000 archaeological and contemporary skeletons. It has been recognised as a museum collection by the Lombardy Region since February 2018, and it is considered one of the largest skeletal collections in the world.

The museum shows how the study of the body makes it possible to reconstruct identity, life and death in the past and in the present: human remains tell stories, science helps solve crimes and medicine helps recognise the signs of mistreatment. The project is supported by the University, Fondazione Cariplo, Fondazione Isacchi Samaja and Terre des Hommes; volunteers of the Touring Club Italiano, with the project “Aperti per Voi”, help open the museum to the public.
