About the museum
Achille Varzi was born in Galliate on 8 August 1904 and died in Bern on 1 July 1948. He began racing motorcycles in 1922 and in 1929 won the absolute Italian title in the 500 cc class ahead of his rival Tazio Nuvolari. From 1928 he moved to cars: he raced for Bugatti, from 1934 was a works driver for Alfa Romeo and in 1935 moved to Auto Union. His victories include the Targa Florio of 1930, the Monaco Grand Prix of 1933 and the Mille Miglia of 1934.
The Sala Museo “Achille Varzi il signore del volante” is located in the south wing of the Castello Visconteo Sforzesco in Galliate and hosts a permanent exhibition on the racing driver from Galliate, together with some of his personal mementoes.
