About the museum
The museum is housed in Porta Giulia, a 16th-century gateway in the fortified walls of Mantua, attributed to Giulio Romano. The space commemorates Andreas Hofer, the leader of the Tyrolean uprising against Napoleonic troops, who was brought to Mantua in chains and sentenced to death at the end of a summary trial.
The site is the starting point of a themed itinerary that links the ancient walls of the Cittadella with Palazzo d’Arco and the historic centre. After the closure imposed by the pandemic, the space reopened in 2020 as a cultural venue and, at the same time, as the city’s tourist info point.
The exhibition is a small collection with a memorial character: at the entrance a diorama welcomes visitors, while copies of relics and commemorative objects, including a plaque and a cup with Hofer’s portrait, recall his figure. Every year, in February, the museum promotes the commemoration of Hofer in Mantua.
