About the museum
The museum was designed by the engineer and architect Livio Lucà Trombetta and inaugurated in 2000 by the emeritus archbishop of Messina, Ignazio Cannavò. It presents the figure of Annibale Maria Di Francia, a priest from Messina who was declared a saint by John Paul II on 16 May 2004 and devoted his work to orphans and the poor.
At the centre of the exhibition is a 1:2 scale reconstruction of the Avignone quarter, where the saint began his charitable work, with its three alleys: the one inhabited by the poor, the one of communal life with the tailor’s workshop, the print shop and the shoemaker’s, and the one with the chapel of 1886 and the rooms of the religious, where the saint lived even after the earthquake of 1908.
The display cases hold utensils of humble craftsmanship from the quarter, tools from the workshops of the “Casette Avignone”, and mementos and vestments of the saint; one showcase is dedicated to the two congregations he founded, the Rogationists and the Daughters of Divine Zeal.
