About the museum
The Museo dello strumento musicale in Reggio Calabria grew out of the research of its founder, Demetrio Spagna. After years in temporary premises, since 1997 the collection has been housed in the former railway station “Reggio – Lido”, a few hundred metres from the port, the Museo nazionale della Magna Grecia and the Falcomatà seafront.
The museum holds about 700 musical instruments from all over the world, grouped into five families: chordophones, aerophones, idiophones, membranophones and electrophones (mechanical-electrical). From time to time the venue has hosted small concerts, mostly acoustic.
On 4 November 2013 an arson attack destroyed about 20% of the collection, both instruments and books.
