About the museum
The Antiquarium occupies the complex of the Hospitalis de Stabio at Ossuccio, an ancient shelter for the poor and for pilgrims, attested since at least the 12th century. Its management was linked to the Giovio family, and official recognition came in 1496 under Pope Alexander VI. The building has been restored to host educational activities and conferences, while preserving original architectural features.
The collection is named after the architect Luigi Belloni (Milan 1927 – Gravedona 2004), who for over forty years gathered finds and testimonies from the area, and after his wife, Mariuccia Zecchinelli, a passionate local historian and director of the Civici Musei di Como.
The rooms display architectural fragments, Roman and early Christian inscriptions, remains of frescoes and over two hundred everyday objects from the Isola Comacina and the Ossuccio area. Educational panels trace the long history of the island, from Roman colonnades to traces of early Christian settlements. The Antiquarium is also the point from which visits to the island’s archaeological park are organised.
