About the museum
The museum occupies the Castle of Baia, built by the Aragonese between 1490 and 1493 and extended during the Spanish viceroyalty; it stands on the promontory closing the bay of Baia to the south. The present display was opened in 2010, and the sections are spread across different parts of the castle, linked by ramps, stairs and terraces; the visit ends in the Piazza d’Armi, with a wide view over the Gulf of Naples.
Beneath the castle lies a large Roman villa built as a maritime residence, which climbs for almost one hundred metres from the sea to the top; in the Padiglione Cavaliere remain floors in opus signinum and black-and-white mosaics. Built in the 2nd century BC and renovated in two phases in the mid-1st century BC, it passed to the imperial domain under Nero.
The collections document the Phlegraean territory: for Cuma there are plaster casts from a workshop in Baia, the rebuilt portico of the forum, the Cumana and Stevens collections and a painted tomb transferred whole; for Pozzuoli the materials of the Augustan colony, aqueducts, the harbour and oriental cults; followed by the finds from Rione Terra and Liternum.
