About the museum

The Aidone archaeological museum opened in 1984 in the former Capuchin convent, next to the former church of San Francesco d’Assisi, to house materials from the excavations of nearby Morgantina, an ancient Sicel city that was Hellenised and flourished in the Hellenistic age on the fringes of the kingdom of Hiero II of Syracuse. Today it is part of the Parco archeologico di Morgantina e della Villa Romana del Casale.

The route follows a chronological and thematic order. It starts with prehistoric and protohistoric settlements (the Castelluccio culture, the first Sicel city), moves on to the coexistence of the Sicel and Greek worlds between the 9th and the mid-5th century BC, with architectural terracottas and a large red-figure krater attributed to Euthymides, and then to Classical and Hellenistic finds from the necropolises and the sanctuaries of Demeter and Persephone. In the former sacristy, objects of everyday, agricultural and religious life are displayed.

After the clandestine excavations of the 1970s and 1980s, some masterpieces that had left Italy illegally returned to Aidone: the acroliths of Demeter and Kore (2009), the Eupolemos silver treasure (2010) and the Goddess of Morgantina, a statue over two metres tall dating to around 425–400 BC, presented to the public in 2011.
