About the museum
The Diocesan Museum of Piazza Armerina was established on 25 November 2001 to preserve, enhance and make accessible the ecclesiastical cultural heritage of the diocese. It is housed in the historic spaces of the former bishop’s palace, in Piazza Duomo, next to the cathedral.
The collections include works and artefacts owned by the Church from the cathedral basilica, from disused places of worship and from donations. They also include items at risk of deterioration or dispersal, which are accepted as “temporary deposits” pending restoration and a suitable return to their original locations.
The display follows a chronological order, from the first centuries of Christianity to the contemporary age, and a topographical order linked to the territory of the diocese, which extends from the Erei mountains to the Gulf of Gela. The works are organised into seven areas with thematic groupings. The museum also has a library with a reading room, a hall for screenings and lectures, educational spaces frequented by schools and universities, and a workshop for the restoration of textiles and liturgical vestments.
