About the museum
The museum is a permanent exhibition set up in the premises of the Lega Zolfatai (sulphur miners’ league), founded in 1903, in Via Garibaldi in Piazza Armerina. It tells the story of sulphur extraction in central-eastern Sicily and the life of those who worked in the mines, including the children employed as carusi.
The display cases and exhibition spaces present numerous sulphur crystals and other minerals from various mining areas, miniature calcheroni (sulphur kilns), Gill furnaces for smelting sulphur, winches over shafts, rail wagons, work tools and a niche dedicated to Saint Barbara, patron saint of miners. A photographic exhibition documents child labour in the sulphur mines.
