About the museum
The museum was inaugurated in 2007 in the former complex of San Quirico and Santa Lucia, in Montelupo Fiorentino. Its establishment gave a defined museum character to materials of great importance, the result of more than thirty years of research carried out in the heart of northern Tuscany.
The material on display and in storage amounts to around 3,000 finds of various origins. The museum stands out from many Tuscan civic museums for the broad geographical area and the wide chronological span it documents: remains from more than 160 prehistoric sites, protohistoric materials from the hut settlements of the Valdarno, the first traces of settlement and of the Etruscan hilltop centres, Roman colonisation and the transformations of the territory.
The route reaches the long transition towards the Middle Ages and the emergence of the new settlements that supported the development of Renaissance Florence. The museum is part of the Montelupo museum system, together with the Museo della Ceramica and the archaeological areas of the territory.
