MaM – Museo Archeologico di Monteriggioni

Municipal museum in the monastic complex of Abbadia Isola, along the Via Francigena, with finds from prehistory to the Middle Ages from the territory of Monteriggioni.

Opening hoursAdmission €5 Café

About the museum

The MaM is housed in the monumental complex of Abbadia Isola, a former monastery founded in 1001 along the Via Francigena, a few kilometres from Monteriggioni. The complex is undergoing progressive restoration and represents the new cultural centre of the area; the museum is a permanent institution of the Comune di Monteriggioni.

The museum is “esterno-interno” (outdoor-indoor): panels and outdoor installations tell the history of the abbey, while two exhibition areas, the Tinaia and the Sala Sigerico, trace the events of the territory backwards from the Middle Ages to protohistory, with reconstructions, models, multimedia supports, finds and panels. The route is designed to be enriched over time through rotations of the finds.

The collections include prehistoric, Etruscan, Roman and medieval materials: objects excavated in the Castello di Staggia, the ornaments from the cloister burial ground, the evidence from the Rigoni burial ground and the Sensano tomb with the urn of Lucius Sentius, the Etruscan grave goods of the Casone with the complex of the Calisna Śepu, the Late Iron Age village of Campassini, and the stone tool industry attributable to a prehistoric site of Homo neanderthalensis.
