About the museum

The museum is housed in the Conservatorio di San Pietro, a women’s monastic building begun in 1604 by Pietro Usimbardi to a design by Giorgio Vasari the Younger. The complex brings together three institutions: the Museo civico e diocesano d’arte sacra, itself the result of the merger of the city’s civic and diocesan collections, the Romano Bilenchi Collection and the Walter Fusi Collection.

The route tells the story of Colle di Val d’Elsa and its diocese through the main artistic expressions, between religious devotion and the civic ambition typical of medieval communes, culminating in 1592 in Colle’s elevation to city status following the establishment of the episcopal see.

On the first floor the sacred art is displayed: paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries, a late 13th-century wooden crucifix, panels on gold grounds and the Tesoro di Galognano (Galognano Treasure), a silver Eucharistic set from the 6th century. Next come the rooms of the civic collections of the 19th and 20th centuries, with the painters from Colle, Antonio Salvetti and Walter Fusi, and the section dedicated to the writer Romano Bilenchi, with a selection of his library and works by painter friends such as Ottone Rosai, Moses Levy and Mino Maccari.
