Museo archeologico Metauros

State archaeological museum in Palazzo Baldari in Gioia Tauro, dedicated to the Greek city of Métauros and its necropolis of the 7th–5th century BC.

Temporarily closedAdmission €5
Temporarily closed (expected until 2026-10-27). The museum is temporarily closed for accessibility and energy-efficiency works (PNRR). Reopening has been announced for 27 October 2026.

About the museum

The museum is housed in Palazzo Baldari, an 18th-century building in the historic centre of Pian delle Fosse in Gioia Tauro, to which it returned after the restoration and re-functioning of the spaces (reopened in October 2024). It belongs to the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali Calabria.

The route illustrates the history of Métauros, a centre founded by inhabitants of Zancle (today Messina) for expansionist and commercial reasons, which in the 6th century BC passed under the influence of the colony of Locri. The intensive urbanisation of the natural terrace of Piano delle Fosse, the site of the ancient settlement, has prevented in-depth investigation, while the large coastal necropolis of the 7th–5th century BC has been excavated. Its rich grave goods attest to links with Mylae, Zancle and Rhegion and with the southern Tyrrhenian area.

Among the materials on display are aryballoi, alabastra of island production, Attic black-glazed and black-figure pottery, and SOS-type transport amphorae. One section is devoted to Roman-period burials (2nd–3rd century AD) with refined glass vessels, another to medieval materials, up to the pottery of the 13th century and of the Renaissance.

Highlights

  • Grave goods of the Greek necropolis of the 7th–5th century BC
  • Attic black-figure pottery and aryballoi
  • SOS-type transport amphorae
  • Glass vessels of the Roman imperial period
  • Medieval ceramics from the area of the “Norman” tower

Permanent exhibition

  • Collezione permanente di Métauros – Finds from the necropolis and settlement of Métauros, from the Greek to the Roman and medieval periods, with Attic pottery, funerary goods and glass.
