About the museum
The Tauriani archaeological park, named after Antonio De Salvo, stands in Palmi, in the locality of Taureana, where the ancient city of Tauriana (Taureanum) was located. Covering three hectares, it occupies the central part of a plateau overlooking the Tyrrhenian coast between Capo Vaticano, the Strait of Messina and the Petrace plain. The Roman city is estimated to have covered about ten hectares.
Work carried out by the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici della Calabria (Archaeological Heritage Superintendency of Calabria) since 1995 has brought to light the remains of Bronze Age huts, dating to about 4,000 years ago, and the urban layout of the Bruttian and Roman city (4th century BC – 4th century AD), with public, sacred and private buildings.
Among the visible structures are the House of the Mosaic, the urban sanctuary and the most recent important find, the building for spectacles, originally built as an amphitheatre for gladiatorial combats and able to hold about 3,000 spectators. The park was built with regional funds and with financing from the Provincial Administration of Reggio Calabria, and it was inaugurated on 17 September 2011.
