About the museum
The Museo diocesano stands in a building next to the cathedral of Oppido Mamertina, which is part of the seminary complex. The building was erected after the 1908 earthquake to a design by the engineer Achille Menghi; the first stone was laid in 1938 during the episcopate of Nicola Canino.
The works on display come from churches, convents, monasteries and other religious sites in the diocese, where they were used in liturgical services. The collections include paintings, wooden and stone sculptures, stone artefacts, sacred furnishings in silver, metal and wood, and vestments such as chasubles, stoles and mitres.
The route unfolds over eight rooms in chronological order, following the history of the diocese and commemorating the bishops who fostered its growth. Two rooms are devoted to marble works, one to Monsignor Alessandro Tommasini, and the last to 20th-century testimonies. The few items predating 1783 are explained by the disastrous earthquake of that year.
