About the museum
The museum is housed in Villa Frigerj, a Neoclassical villa designed by Errico Riccio in 1830 for the baron Ferrante Frigerj. The building stands on a small rise in the Villa Comunale of Chieti, near the ancient Porta Sant'Andrea. In 1864 the villa became property of the Comune and was used as a school; in 1959, thanks to the archaeologist Valerio Cianfarani, it was converted into the Museo archeologico nazionale.
A new exhibition route opened in 2011 and was expanded in 2014, the year in which the museum was assigned to the Polo museale dell'Abruzzo. The museum is considered the most important archaeological collection in the region.
On the ground floor are ancient statuary, the numismatic collection, the 19th-century Pansa collection and the Warrior of Capestrano, a 6th-century BC sculpture displayed in the room “Al di là del tempo”, designed by the artist Mimmo Palladino; the Sabines, Frentani, Aequi and Marsi are also documented here. On the first floor are presented the grave goods from the necropolises and sanctuaries of the Vestini, Peligni, Marrucini and Carricini. The specialised library, on the first floor, holds about 13,000 volumes.
