About the museum
The museum stands on the summit of the hill that dominates Chieti, once a place of worship and the acropolis of the city of Teate. The area was levelled in the mid-19th century to create a parade ground and was later turned into a sports field. Excavations in the 20th century brought to light the remains of a sanctuary with three temples from the mid-2nd century BC, and the amphitheatre, built in the 1st century AD on the same hill.
The museum building, designed by the architect Ettore de Lellis, opened on 18 November 2000 to protect and enhance the temples, the amphitheatre and the finds from the excavations, together with the materials of the Vincenzo Zecca collection, the Antiquarium Teatino and the archaeological investigations of Chieti and of the Marrucinian area.
The visit is organised along three routes: “L'inizio della storia urbana” (the beginning of urban history), “La terra dei Marrucini” (the land of the Marrucini) and “Da Roma a ieri” (from Rome to yesterday). Among the best-known pieces are the bronze statuette of the “Dea di Rapino”, the reconstructions of the pediments of the Republican temples with painted terracottas, and the mausoleum of Lusius Storax with reliefs of gladiatorial scenes. The museum is part of the National Archaeological Museums of Chieti, under the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali Abruzzo.
