About the museum
The centre was set up on the initiative of the Comune di Casalincontrada, in the Chieti area, with the aim of collecting and preserving local knowledge of building in “massone”, an earth-and-straw mixture that survives in significant form in Italy mainly in the countryside of Abruzzo and the Marche. It is recognised by the Abruzzo Region as a local-authority museum of local interest and is run together with the Associazione Terrae, active since 2000.
The seat is Villa De Lollis. The permanent exhibitions illustrate earth as a building material, ancient and modern, around the world, and earth construction in Italy, also through panels provided by the Italian association of scholars of earthen architecture. The exhibition “Memoria e Realtà” also remains on display; since the 1980s it has linked the Abruzzo territory with Algeria, and it holds the first materials of the census launched by the Province of Chieti in 1981.
The centre offers a specialist library, a photo archive with slide and video collections, practical workshops on traditional building techniques, lectures and an environmental education programme for schools. Visits also include a guided route to the raw-earth houses in the municipal area.
