About the museum

The Museo archeologico nazionale della Lomellina is a state institution inaugurated in 1998 and enlarged in 2006. It is housed in atmospheric rooms of the Castello Sforzesco in Vigevano and gathers archaeological evidence from excavations and chance finds in the Lomellina territory, with the aim of spreading knowledge of it to a wide public of visitors to the city and its monuments.

The rooms present sections from different periods, from the Celtic age to the Early Middle Ages. The first room, the 15th-century stable, is devoted to the late Celtic and Roman necropolises, the most significant archaeological documentation of the area: among the grave goods, glass vessels for the variety and beauty of their shapes, and figured terracottas, which allow observations on funerary ritual, stand out.

Two other rooms illustrate respectively Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages, with grave goods from Lombard burials at San Martino Siccomario, Garlasco and Cava Manara, and the territory of Vigevano from prehistory to the Roman age. The last room is reserved for rotating displays, while the large hall next to the stables, intended in the future for the prehistoric and protohistoric section, is used for temporary exhibitions, lectures and educational activities.
