About the museum

The museum commemorates the battle of Magenta of 4 June 1859, a key episode of the Second War of Independence, in which the Franco-Piedmontese troops defeated the Austrian army, paving the way for the liberation of Milan. It is housed in Casa Giacobbe, a building that symbolises the fighting: on the main façade, deliberately preserved after the restoration, the marks of the clashes are still visible.

An earlier museum had been set up in the house after the battle, with weapons, uniforms, flags and cannons collected on the battlefield by the people of Magenta, but in the 1960s many of the objects were lost. The initiative was resumed in 2012, with contributions from citizens, and the new museum was inaugurated on 23 April 2012 with funds from the European Union, the State and Regione Lombardia.

The educational route includes the Sala d'Onore (Hall of Honour) at the entrance, two video rooms on Magenta and on images of yesterday and today, and rooms dedicated to the protagonists: Victor Emmanuel II with relics of the Piedmontese army, Marshal Mac Mahon, Field Marshal Gyulay and the generals Espinasse and Clér. All the relics on display are period pieces that belonged to soldiers who died on the battlefield.
