About the museum
The museum is set up on the ground floor of the medieval palazzo of Martino IV, one of the three papal palaces behind the cathedral of Orvieto. It was inaugurated in 1982 and gathers material found in the territory up to the 19th century, previously kept in the archaeological section of the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo.
The collection, of several thousand objects, has been enriched by the wall paintings of the Golini tombs of Porano, formerly in the Museo Archeologico di Firenze, and by a substantial group of the oldest finds from the city: the urban necropolises of Crocifisso del Tufo and Cannicella, the temples of the Belvedere and of via San Leonardo, as well as the necropolises of Porano and Castellonchio. The materials are arranged by chronology and topography.
Linked to the research activity of the Soprintendenza (heritage authority) and of the scientific institutions of the area, the museum is constantly evolving: finds from recent or ongoing excavations are displayed on a rotating basis. Together with the Museo Claudio Faina, on the opposite side of the square, it offers an overview of archaeological knowledge about Orvieto. Since 15 January 2026 the museum has been closed to the public for a refurbishment affecting the entire building, which will last several months.
