About the museum
The museum occupies the ground floor of Palazzo Soliano, a 14th-century building overlooking Piazza del Duomo, linked to the memory of Boniface VIII and considered the largest papal residence in Orvieto. For a long time the palace housed the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo.
Since September 2008 the ground-floor rooms have housed the collection that the Sicilian sculptor Emilio Greco (1913–1995) donated to the city of Orvieto, for which he also made the three large bronze doors of the Duomo, installed in 1962–1964 in place of the wooden ones. The collection comprises 32 bronze sculptures and about 60 graphic works, including drawings, lithographs and etchings, dating from 1947 to 1990.
Among the best-known pieces are the Lottatore (The Wrestler), shown in London for the 1948 Olympics, and the preparatory plaster for the Monument to Pope John XXIII (1965–1967). The museum is run by the Opera del Duomo di Orvieto and forms part of the visit route of the cathedral complex.
