About the museum

The museum gathers the works of art and furnishings linked to the history of the cathedral of Orvieto and of the Opera del Duomo, the body that has looked after the building of the cathedral since the late 13th century. Its rooms are in the Palazzi Papali behind the cathedral and in Palazzo Soliano, on Piazza del Duomo.

The collections include sculptures and paintings from the 13th century onwards: the Maestà dei Servi by Coppo di Marcovaldo, the polyptych of St Dominic by Simone Martini, the self-portrait and the Magdalene by Luca Signorelli, the group of the Annunciation by Francesco Mochi, glazed terracottas from the Della Robbia workshop, the reliquary of the skull of St Savinus, parchment drawings of the cathedral's designs and goldsmiths' work.

Since 1 September 2024 the museum has been closed to the public for requalification and rearrangement works, with no reopening date announced. In the meantime the Museo Emilio Greco and the Sotterranei del Duomo remain regularly open; they are included in the ticket for the cathedral complex, and an exhibition at the Museo Claudio Faina presents works from the museum.
