About the museum
The museum is housed in the Palazzo Colonna Barberini in Palestrina, built on the structures of the Santuario della Fortuna Primigenia, ancient Praeneste. It has been located here since 1956.
The collections document Praeneste from the 4th to the 1st century BC and include bronzes, strigils, cistae and decorated mirrors. Among the most famous pieces are the Mosaico del Nilo, attributed to Alexandrian artists of the late 2nd century BC, and a marble relief of the Augustan period from the Grimani series.
Together with the Santuario della Fortuna Primigenia and the Foro di Praeneste, the museum forms part of the same group of sites, which can be visited with a single ticket.
