About the museum

The museum of the Sanctuary of the Madre del Buon Consiglio is housed in the 18th-century convent attached to the basilica of Genazzano. It was set up in 1974 for the bicentenary of the construction of the convent (1774) and of the birth of Blessed Stefano Bellesini.

The route begins in the Corridor of San Giovanni Battista, reached from the monumental 18th-century sacristy, with paintings from the 15th to the 19th century, frescoes detached from the church's choir loft by Tito Troya and a statue of the Madonna used in processions. The central gallery displays the oldest paintings, many of them donated by Pope Leo XIII, and historical vestments, including chasubles from the 17th to 19th centuries. In the Corridor of the Bell a bell from 1424 is kept which, according to tradition, is linked to the appearance of the image of the Madonna in 1467, as well as a 17th-century wooden crucifix.

On the mezzanine are gathered ex voto, relics and gifts, and two rooms with memorabilia of Blessed Stefano Bellesini; ex voto in silver foil marked PRG (per grazia ricevuta, “for grace received”) are also on display. The museum has a shop, accessible from the central gallery.
