About the museum
The 16th-century house where the composer Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525–1594) was born is today the seat of the Foundation named after him, established in 1973. The three-storey building was restored by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and handed over to the Foundation in 1994 as its seat and study centre.
On the ground floor is a permanent biographical and iconographic exhibition on the composer's life, art and publications, curated by Lino Bianchi. The first floor holds the Foundation's study material, with microfilms of Palestrina's musical sources and an analytical card index of his manuscripts with their musical incipits; one room displays portraits, including an original 16th-century work.
The second floor houses the library of the Study Centre, with about 7,000 volumes on music and musicology and a specialist section on Renaissance culture. The large hall, furnished with antique furniture, is used for seminars and lectures; the inner courtyard preserves the house's ancient well.
