About the museum
The museum is housed in the Rocca Farnese in Valentano, built as a place of defence and lookout and turned into a residential palace during the Farnese ownership, from 1354 to 1649. After the destruction of the Duchy of Castro it was used as a granary and prison, and in 1730 it became a cloistered convent of Dominican nuns; between 1867 and 1870 one wing housed a garrison of papal Zouaves.
Around 1930 the Comune assigned the Rocca to the primary schools; the building was then abandoned in 1957. Restoration began in 1979 and led in 1996 to the opening of the museum, established by the town council in 1989. In 2011 the restoration of the southern and eastern areas was completed; these now house the tactile and olfactory route, the specialist library, the archives and the restoration workshop.
The display includes a prehistoric and protohistoric section, a medieval, Renaissance and modern section, and the two rooms of the Octagonal Tower with the Etruscan collection donated by Bishop D’Ascenzi and the Enigmatic Tablet of the Latera caldera. The Rocca itself offers an architectural itinerary with the Cortile d’Amore, the well by Sangallo, the loggia of Paul III and the Scala Santa. The museum is part of the Sistema museale territoriale del lago di Bolsena (territorial museum system of Lake Bolsena).
