About the museum
The museum dates from 1864, when it was founded as a civic museum on the proposal of the historian Giuseppe Picone. In 1967 it was moved to its present seat, inaugurated on 24 June of that year, and became a national museum; since 1977 it has been regional. The building, designed by the architect Franco Minissi, was created in the contrada San Nicola from the church of San Nicola and what remained of its convent, restored for the occasion. The museum is dedicated to the archaeologist Pietro Griffo, who studied the archaeological heritage of the city at length.
The collections comprise more than 5,000 finds, displayed in 17 rooms, from prehistory to the early Middle Ages. The first eleven rooms are devoted to the ancient city of Akragas, the others to the rest of south-central Sicily.
Among the most important works are the Telamon of the Olympieion, the Ephebe of Agrigento, the Warrior of Agrigento and the Aphrodite at the bath; among the vases stand out the dinos with triskeles, the Gela krater, the krater with the lament for Patroclus and the one with Perseus and Andromeda. In the garden are also placed two contemporary works, “Ophelia” by Gunther Stilling and the “Empedocles Bronze Monument Courtyard” by Greg Wyatt.
