About the museum
The house is in the contrada Caos, about 4 km from Agrigento, on a ridge above the sea among olive and oak trees. It is a rural dwelling from the late 18th century, where Luigi Pirandello was born in 1867, when his family took refuge there during a cholera epidemic. Declared a national monument in 1949, it was bought by the Regione Siciliana in 1952 and restored; since 1987 it has formed a single institution with the Biblioteca Museo Luigi Pirandello.
The new multimedia display, opened in 2021, guides visitors through six thematic rooms with the narration of actor Leo Gullotta, original texts, archival audiovisual material and original music. The rooms cover the family and his passion for painting, the places he loved, theatre and cinema, the theme of life and death with the Greek vase that held his ashes, the writer’s vocabulary, his novels and short stories, and the theme of masks.
Near the house a short path leads to the centuries-old pine under which Pirandello liked to sit and write, and where his tomb lies; it can be visited from 9:00 until one hour before sunset.
