About the museum
The Museo archeologico Villa Sulcis is the heart of the Sistema Museale di Carbonia and at the centre of a whole chain of cultural heritage work, from excavation to cataloguing, from display to outreach. On behalf of the municipality of Carbonia it is responsible for the research at Nuraghe Sirai, and it took its present form with the renovation of 2008.
It displays the finds from the research carried out at the many sites of the area: the rock shelter of Su Carroppu, the domus de janas necropoleis of Monte Crobu, Cannas di Sotto and Locci Santus, and the archaeological area of Monte Sirai and Nuraghe Sirai, which has become the largest archaeological park in Sulcis. The route tells the story of the archaeological landscape from the early Neolithic to the Byzantine period. It moves from the territory room, devoted to prehistory and protohistory, with the Nuragic civilisation and its contacts with Greeks, Etruscans and Phoenicians, to the room of Phoenician Sulci, with materials from Sant'Antioco and Bitia, and to the Monte Sirai room, with everyday life, religion, architecture and funerary practices of the Phoenician and Punic settlement, including a reconstructed Punic kitchen and a chamber tomb. One section is devoted to the Roman period, with milestones of the Via Sulcitana and the local necropoleis.
The display has a strong educational character and provides the setting for numerous workshops and educational services for schools.
