About the museum

The museum was founded in 1972 by the Gruppo Ricerche Speleologiche “E.A. Martel” of Carbonia and became a civic museum in 1996, when the collection was lent to the municipality. Until 2009 it occupied premises in via Campania. The new site, opened on 2 June 2009, is in the former mechanical workshops pavilion of the Grande Miniera di Serbariu, converted for this purpose, with a floor area of about 1,740 m², of which about 1,050 m² are used for the exhibition route and educational activities.

The route is devoted to the environments of the geological past of the Sulcis-Iglesiente and follows chronological order, from the rocks and fossils of the Cambrian, about 540 million years ago, up to the remains of Homo sapiens. Its central theme is the bio-events and geo-events recorded in the rocks of south-western Sardinia, with particular attention to fossils.

The palaeobiodiversity section houses part of the historic collections of the Museo Martel together with finds from various parts of the world. Another section deals with mass extinctions and dinosaurs, with a life-size reproduction of a Tyrannosaurus rex. Also on display are a dwarf mammoth, a group of Prolagus skeletons and the remains of a small monkey of the genus Macaca. The building also houses the caving group and the “Ottavio Corona” library, and educational activities take place in interactive workshops.
