About the museum
The museum of the Istituto centrale per il catalogo e la documentazione (ICCD) was established in 1996, but the idea dates back to 1986, when the institute organised a small exhibition of antique cameras for the Settimana dei Beni Culturali (Cultural Heritage Week). That initiative gave rise to the project of a museum which, alongside a permanent display of 19th- and 20th-century instruments, would bring together activities linked to the conservation, use and promotion of the ICCD's historical photographic holdings.
Ten years later the MAFoS, the Museo Archivio di Fotografia Storica, was founded, bringing together a museum, archive, library and research centre devoted to historical photography. The permanent display of cameras and photographic instruments is on the ground floor of the so-called Conservatorio delle Zitelle, in the San Michele a Ripa Grande complex, and is complemented by five rooms for temporary exhibitions.
