About the museum
The Museo diffuso di Testaccio was developed within the Soprintendenza Speciale per i Beni Archeologici di Roma (special heritage authority for archaeology in Rome) to connect ancient Rome with the modern city. It has no single building: it links the district through a route of information panels, a multimedia route and a website, and several archaeological areas.
In the Roman period the Testaccio plain became, from the 2nd century BC and especially in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, the river port of the Emporium, a district of warehouses and a controlled dump for oil amphorae, from which Monte Testaccio arose. Between the 5th and 7th centuries the area returned to the countryside, and in the Middle Ages it held kitchen gardens and vineyards. After Italian unification the 1871 town plan designated it an industrial and working-class district, with the Mattatoio (slaughterhouse) designed by the architect Ersoch.
The museum includes the Emporium (archaeological area on the Lungotevere Testaccio), the urban archaeological park of the Porticus Aemilia in Via Rubattino, the archaeological area of the Nuovo Mercato di Testaccio, and Sottosopra, an archaeology space for children aged 4 to 11. Monte Testaccio is managed by Roma Capitale.
