About the museum
The museum is housed in the former Bishop’s Palace of Urbania, a building with roots in the Benedictine abbey of San Cristoforo del Ponte, which took on its present Renaissance form thanks to work by Francesco di Giorgio Martini, Gerolamo Genga and the stonemasons of Sant’Ippolito.
The rooms hold the diocese’s varied heritage: the lapidary, the great hall, the silverware room, the room of sacred vestments and the room of the Metaurensi Mannerists, with sketches and paintings by Federico Zuccari, Giovanni Giacomo Pandolfi and Claudio Ridolfi. On the upper floor are also the ecclesiastical library and the diocesan archives.
The last rooms are devoted to ceramics. Thanks to donations from the scholar Don Corrado Leonardi, after whom the museum is named, the route documents the production of Castel delle Ripe, Casteldurante and Urbania from the 13th to the 20th century, and ends with a room of ceramics from the last century, a testimony to an art that still produces high-quality objects in Urbania.
