About the museum
The Oratorio di San Giovanni was the seat of the Confraternity of Saint John the Baptist of Urbino. At the beginning of the 20th century the confraternities of Sant'Antonio abate and San Giacomo Apostolo were also gathered here, which is the source of the second title by which the site is sometimes remembered.
The main attraction is the fresco cycle that the brothers Lorenzo and Jacopo Salimbeni, from San Severino Marche, painted around 1415–1416. On the wall behind the high altar the Crucifixion is depicted, while the side walls tell the stories of the life of Saint John the Baptist. The whole is considered one of the masterpieces of late Gothic painting in the Marche. The frescoes underwent restoration in 2012–2013.
The external façade was radically restored in neo-Gothic forms in the early 20th century to a design by Diomede Catalucci. The oratory stands in Via Federico Barocci, a few steps from the nearby Oratorio di San Giuseppe, which is also open to visitors.
