About the museum
The museum complex is housed in the church of Santa Maria dei Servi, also known as Santa Maria extra muros, the most important church in Sant’Angelo in Vado, which has been declared a national monument. It is an example of the late Romanesque style, with its façade facing the Metauro river. Over the centuries it has been altered and combines several overlapping styles, including numerous 17th-century Baroque altars. The building is part of the network of sacred art museums of the Archdiocese of Urbino-Urbania-Sant’Angelo in Vado.
Among the paintings are works by the brothers Taddeo and Federico Zuccari, Mannerist painters from the area, by Raffaellino del Colle, a pupil of Raphael, and by Francesco Mancini, a painter from the local area.
The archaeological section, in the former convent, documents the ancient Tifernum Mataurense, the Roman city on whose site Sant’Angelo in Vado stands. It includes a lapidary collection of stone and marble pieces, pottery, metal objects and tools from recent excavations.
