About the museum
The museum of puppets was founded in 2006 in Via della Giudecca, a short distance from the Teatro dei Pupi, in Ortigia's Jewish quarter. It is housed in Palazzo Midiri-Cardona and run by the Associazione Compagnia dei Pupari Vaccaro-Mauceri, which also operates the theatre and has staged the opera dei pupi since 1995.
The display of puppets, marionettes, stage props and set materials traces the main moments in the history of the Vaccaro brothers, famous puppeteers from Syracuse. The museum also tells the story of the Syracusan puppet tradition, which is linked to Francesco Puzzo and his family and to the revival of the theatre after 1978.
The museum also includes a section on figures from other countries, including burattini (glove puppets), marionettes and shadow figures. The route can be visited independently, with explanatory totems in five languages, and guided tours are organised for individuals, families and groups.
