About the museum
The Museo Aristaios opened in December 2012 thanks to an agreement between the Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali (Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities), Roma Capitale and the Fondazione Musica per Roma, which made it possible to turn the collection of the conductor and passionate collector Giuseppe Sinopoli into a museum. The Sala del Peduncolo of the Auditorium Parco della Musica, more than 300 square metres, permanently houses the 161 works bought by the Ministry from the conductor's heirs. The restoration and display project was designed by the studio Alvisi Kirimoto.
The works on display are important archaeological finds, ranging from Minoan pottery of around 3200 BC to Magna Graecian works of around 300 BC, documenting the emergence and development of different cultures. The large transparent display cases present examples of Minoan, Mycenaean, Geometric, Corinthian, Laconian, East Greek, Attic black-figure and red-figure, Italiote red-figure and locally made Daunian pottery. Also noteworthy are a Cycladic marble vessel (3200–2700 BC), bronzes from the Etruscan and Magna Graecian areas, and a series of mostly votive figurines depicting deities, offerers and animals.
Attic production is of exceptional quality, with works by important black-figure painters, including Lydos and the Painter of the Lisippidi, and red-figure painters such as the Painter of Syleus and the Painter of Eretria.
