About the museum
The museum, opened in 1939, occupies several rooms of the convent attached to the church of Sant'Onofrio al Gianicolo in Rome. It was here that the poet Torquato Tasso spent his last days and died on 25 April 1595; his tomb is in a chapel of the church.
The collection brings together memorabilia linked to the poet: the urn that for many years held his ashes, an autograph letter, personal objects including a crucifix and an antique ceramic piece, as well as early editions of “Gerusalemme liberata” (Jerusalem Delivered) and other works, displayed in cases.
The complex is today entrusted to the Ordine Equestre del Santo Sepolcro di Gerusalemme. The church, of Renaissance design with Gothic elements, contains works by Antoniazzo Romano and Baldassarre Peruzzi and, in the portico, scenes from the life of Saint Jerome by Domenichino.
