About the museum
The Museo Artistico Industriale was founded by Prince Gaetano Filangieri and opened on 7 February 1882, by decree of the Minister of Public Instruction Francesco De Sanctis, as a teaching resource for the applied arts, such as goldsmithing, cabinetmaking, ceramics and metalworking. Domenico Morelli, Filippo Palizzi and Giovanni Tesorone collaborated in its creation.
In 1889 the museum moved to the former college of the Bourbon Navy; in 1899 Domenico Morelli and Guglielmo Raimondi decorated the façade with majolica tiles in neo-Renaissance style, which were damaged during the war in 1943. After many decades of closure the museum returned to the city in 1986, thanks above all to Enrico Trombino, who catalogued about 7,000 works.
The collections consist mainly of ceramics (about 6,000 pieces), works by Filippo Palizzi, archaeological finds from Magna Graecia, Egyptian and Coptic objects, Islamic tiles, Chinese and Japanese objects, a bronze by Vincenzo Gemito and Salviati glass from Venice.
