About the museum

The palace was built from 1600 to a design by Domenico Fontana as the residence of the Spanish viceroys of Naples. Over the centuries, under the Bourbons and then under the Savoy, it was enlarged and remodelled by many architects, among them Luigi Vanvitelli, Ferdinando Sanfelice and Gaetano Genovese, and the last major phase of works was completed in 1858.

The palace was the residence of the sovereigns of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, and it preserves furnishings, paintings, sculptures and decorative arts that document court life. The Appartamento di Etichetta, the main route of the visit, includes the representative rooms, such as the Sala del Trono, and a grand staircase of honour.

The museum was inaugurated in 1919. Today, in addition to the Appartamento di Etichetta, the route includes the Museo della Fabbrica, the Museo Caruso, the Giardino Pensile and the Giardino Romantico. The palace also houses the Biblioteca nazionale. Together with the Museo Pignatelli it forms a single autonomous state institute, with a combined ticket.
