About the museum
In 1948 former partisans and citizens built, with voluntary labour, a summer mountain colony on land ceded to the municipality of Sarzana; until 1971 it hosted thousands of children. Later the building deteriorated considerably; from 1994, on the initiative of the ANPI (National Association of Italian Partisans) of Sarzana and in agreement with the municipal administration, it was decided to turn it into a museum of the Resistance for the provinces of La Spezia and Massa Carrara.
The building was restored with contributions from public bodies, associations and private individuals and was completed in 1999; the museum opened on 3 June 2000. The route is not a collection of relics but an audiovisual and multimedia installation, created by Studio Azzurro, which preserves and passes on the memory of witnesses: partisans, but also civilians, victims of massacres, poverty and war.
The video testimonies are arranged in thematic groups in chronological order, from the rise of Fascism to the Liberation, through the Nazi massacres, the civilian resistance of men and women, and the drama of war and deportations. The museum is dedicated to the partisan commanders Alessandro Brucellaria “Memo” and Flavio Bertone “Walter” and to all who fought for freedom. It is run by the Associazione Museo Storico della Resistenza.
