About the museum
The museum occupies a fishermen's house from the first half of the 19th century in the historic centre of Aci Trezza, with a courtyard, a small garden and a stone arch of lava. According to local tradition, it is the home in which Giovanni Verga set the family of padron 'Ntoni in his novel “I Malavoglia”. A medlar tree (nespolo), which gives the house its name, grows in the courtyard.
The route comprises two rooms. The first is dedicated to Luchino Visconti's film “La terra trema”, shot in Aci Trezza in 1948 with the villagers as performers, and holds photographs, posters and other material relating to the filming. The second, the “Stanza dei Malavoglia” (Malavoglia Room), recreates the daily life of 19th-century fishermen with work tools and household objects, alongside photographs taken by Verga and letters addressed to his brother Pietro.
