About the museum
The Museo Diocesano di Acireale is housed in Palazzo D’Amico, a Liberty (Art Nouveau) building in the historic centre, behind the cathedral, in Via Monsignor Genuardi. It was created to safeguard and promote the artistic heritage of the diocese, which comprises eighteen municipalities, and is directed by Don Antonio Agostini, lecturer in modern art history at the University of Catania.
The rooms hold works from the 17th to the 19th century: paintings, sacred vestments, liturgical silverware, wooden sculptures and manuscripts important for the life of the diocesan territory, including works of the Sicilian school from churches of the diocese.
The museum also presents itself as a dispersed museum, with a route that extends into the surrounding area, and promotes cultural initiatives such as the series of talks “Liberi di pensare”, organised together with the Maria Barbagallo foundation. It also offers workshops for children and young people and a nature walk up to the Timpa di Acireale.
