About the museum
The museum occupies several rooms next to the sacristy of the collegiate basilica of San Sebastiano, one of the main Baroque buildings of Acireale. The church was begun in 1609, completed in 1644 and largely rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake, between 1699 and 1705. In 1924 it was elevated to a collegiate church.
The route is divided into three sections. The sacristy houses works of Sicilian manufacture, including an 18th-century wax statue of the Virgin as a child, paintings by Pietro Paolo Vasta, Matteo Desiderato and Giovanni Lo Coco, and a Rococo silver throne of 1767. The following rooms display ex-votos dedicated to Saint Sebastian, arm-shaped reliquaries, sacred vessels, a gold monstrance set with diamonds, the jewels of the saint’s statue used during the festival, and embroidered vestments.
The third section is the 18th-century crypt, also used for lectures and concerts, where paintings and wooden statues are kept.
