About the museum
The museum is housed in Palazzo Colelli, in the centre of Sante Marie, and opened in 2008 after restoration work promoted by the Abruzzo Region and the Comunità montana Marsica 1. It tells the story of brigandage in the Marsica and the Cicolano in the period around Italian unification.
In December 1861, a few months after the proclamation of the Kingdom, the Catalan general José Borjes was captured in a farmhouse in the Val di Luppa and shortly afterwards executed by firing squad at Tagliacozzo. Brigandage continued in these areas until 1870.
The collections include documents on brigandage before and after unification, ransom demand letters, period rifles, cameras issued to the National Guard, military uniforms and photographs of brigands, including of the Cartòre gang. One section is devoted to women brigands. The museum is also the starting point of the first stage of the “Cammino dei Briganti” (Brigands’ Way), a hiking route opened in 2016.
