About the museum
The Museo civico archeologico di Castiglion Fiorentino opened in 2001 on the upper floor of the Palazzo Pretorio and holds the finds from excavations carried out since the late 1980s. It tells the story of the town and its territory in five rooms devoted to the ancient Etruscan centre and neighbouring settlements, from the Iron Age to Late Antiquity. Of particular importance are the deposits of Brolio and Montecchio, the remains of the roof of the Etruscan sanctuary discovered in the Cassero area, and the evidence from the Etruscan site of Brolio Melmone, a centre of production and trade along the Clanis, the ancient Chiana river.
Since 2008 the museum has included a medieval section, which presents materials from the 9th century onwards, among them early and Renaissance maiolica, with panels on the dense network of castles, parish churches and monasteries in the territory. The display stands out for its modern computer and educational systems and for its numerous multimedia supports.
The underground archaeological route passes through areas excavated in several campaigns and shows the continuity of settlement from the 8th century BC to the Middle Ages: a protohistoric village of huts, an Etruscan house, the remains of an Etruscan sanctuary measuring 17 x 22 metres and two medieval towers. The museum and the route are part of the Sistema museale castiglionese, together with the picture gallery and the Torre del Cassero.
