About the museum
The museum is housed in the ancient pieve of San Giuliano, commonly known as the Pieve vecchia since the construction of the adjacent Collegiata, of which the apse survives. Since 2006 the building has housed a large display of sacred art with more than a hundred works from various religious buildings in Castiglion Fiorentino, largely previously not visible for conservation or security reasons.
The main hall displays, among other things, the processional statue of the Madonna della Cintola and the Madonna di Petrognano, a 13th-century polychrome wooden sculpture. In the Cappella del Coro, where the high altar of the pieve once stood, are two processional statues dear to the people of Castiglion Fiorentino, the Christ at the Column and the Risen Christ by Niccolò di Smeraldo Salvi, carried in procession during the Holy Week rites.
The collection also includes paintings, goldsmith's work, sculptures, textiles and liturgical furnishings, such as the panel by Agnolo di Lorentino with the Madonna enthroned and saints, the Annunciation by Ottavio Vannini of 1621, the tonacella (liturgical vestment) of Petreto, a 15th-century piviale (cope) and a 17th-century monstrance.
